The Boy Next World Review: A Confusing but Compelling Ride

It’s time for another BL review, and this one features one of my favorite Thai pairings: BossNoeul.

The duo consists of Boss Chaikamon Sermsongwittaya and Noeul Nuttarat Tangwai. I first discovered them through Love in the Air, the very first BL I ever watched. To this day, it remains one of my favorites. If you’d like to read my review of Love in the Air, you can find it here.

Today, I’m reviewing The Boy Next World.

Let’s get this out of the way: this series is a complete mind-bender. From the first episode, I was confused about what was actually happening. In fact, I had watched the series once before and walked away still unsure about the plot. My loyalty to BossNoeul convinced me to give it another chance, and after a second watch, I’m glad I did. Even though the story can feel messy at times, the emotional core and the chemistry between the leads make it worth the ride.

Synopsis | The Boy Next World

The Boy Next World follows Cir (Boss) and Phu (Noeul).

The story begins on a rainy night when Cir is injured and falls into a coma for three days. When he wakes up, he firmly believes that he and Phu are already dating.Naturally, everyone around him is confused, including the audience. The show slowly introduces the idea of parallel universes, suggesting that there may be another reality where Cir and Phu are actually together. Meanwhile, in the present world, the two begin growing closer. But this creates an emotional dilemma: if another version of their love exists somewhere else, is this relationship real or borrowed from another world?

Main Characters

Cir

Cir is protective, serious, and intensely devoted. He refuses food or gifts from the girls who flirt with him at school. The only person he accepts anything from is Phu. His loyalty borders on obsession, though in a strangely endearing way.

Much of the confusion surrounding the plot revolves around Cir. Early in the story, he tells Phu that they are already together and implies that he came from an alternate reality where they are a couple. At first, this turns out to be a lie.

However, Cir later begins experiencing dreams that suggest something deeper, glimpses of alternate realities where he and Phu truly are together. The series suggests that multiple timelines exist. In some, Cir and Phu are meant to be. In others, they are not.

The confusing part is that Cir initially didn’t actually travel from another universe; he fabricated the story. Yet toward the end of the series, he becomes trapped somewhere outside the current reality, and another version of Cir from an alternate world appears to take his place. It’s strange, messy, and honestly difficult to fully understand. But the chemistry between Cir and Phu is strong enough that it smooths over some of the narrative holes.

Phu

Phu is superstitious and believes strongly in maintaining good luck. What he doesn’t realize is that his luck has always had a name: Cir. Whenever it rains, Cir quietly places an umbrella where Phu will find it so he can walk home safely. Cir watches over him in ways Phu never notices.

When Cir gets hurt at the beginning of the series, Phu suddenly begins experiencing a string of misfortunes. Slowly, he realizes that the invisible guardian who had always been protecting him is gone. Phu’s compassion is one of his most endearing qualities. Even without knowing who his mysterious protector is, he still prays that the person watching over him will recover if they are hurt.

What Worked (and What Didn’t)

The biggest challenge with The Boy Next World is the storytelling. The concept of multiple realities is interesting, but the execution feels unclear and sometimes contradictory. At several points, the show seems unsure whether Cir is lying, dreaming, or genuinely connected to another universe.

However, the emotional connection between Cir and Phu helps anchor the series. Their relationship feels sincere, which makes it easier to stay invested even when the plot becomes confusing. And honestly, Boss and Noeul’s chemistry does a lot of heavy lifting.

Ratings for The Boy Next World

Acting — 5/5
Boss Chaikamon Sermsongwittaya and Noeul Nuttarat Tangwai both deliver strong performances. Boss captures Cir’s intensity and devotion well, while Noeul brings warmth and emotional sincerity to Phu.

Chemistry — 4/5
This is where the show truly shines. Their connection feels natural and believable, and it carries the emotional weight of the series.

Plot — 2/5
The idea of parallel universes is intriguing, but the execution falls short. The story introduces complex concepts without clearly explaining the rules of its world, which makes the plot difficult to follow and sometimes frustrating.

Cinematography — 3/5
The visuals are solid, especially in the rain scenes and dreamlike moments. While not groundbreaking, the cinematography helps create the emotional atmosphere of the story.

Overall Rating — 3.5/5

Should You Watch The Boy Next World

Honestly, watch it to say you watched it.

If you’re a fan of Boss Chaikamon Sermsongwittaya and Noeul Nuttarat Tangwai, then The Boy Next World is still worth checking out simply because their chemistry is so strong. But go in with the right expectations.

The plot is confusing, and the parallel-universe concept isn’t executed as clearly as it could have been. If you’re hoping for a tightly written story with clear rules and logic, this series might leave you frustrated. However, if you’re watching for the pairing, the emotional moments, and the quiet scenes between Cir and Phu, there’s still something here to enjoy.

Final Thoughts

The Boy Next World is far from a perfect series. The plot twists itself into knots, and there are moments where the story seems to lose its own logic. Yet beneath the tangled timelines and alternate realities lies something simple: a love story about two people who seem destined to find each other, no matter the universe.

Even when the plot loses its direction, Cir and Phu never really do.And sometimes that’s enough; because some love stories don’t need perfect logic. Sometimes they just need two people who keep finding their way back to each other.
