Kehlani: Soulful, But Playing It Safe?

I’ve been diving into Kehlani’s music lately, and there’s a reason her songs resonate with so many. They feel soft, romantic, and full of emotion, with lyrics about love that pull you in. A few tracks in, I was hooked. Her voice is smooth, the songs feel dreamy, and it’s easy to get lost in the vibe.
But as I listened more, I noticed a pattern. Many of her songs start to feel very similar. The melodies, the way she sings, even the overall feel of the songs sometimes seem like the same track over and over, just with different words. It’s not a bad thing, familiarity can be comforting, but I found myself wishing for more variety and surprises.
That said, there are definitely songs I’ve added to my liked songs. Piece of Mind, Folded Remix, and After Hours Remix. I’ve noticed that the songs I like best often feature another artist. The other voices or styles bring something new to the song, and I can’t help but wonder what Kehlani could do if she tried that kind of freshness in her solo tracks too.
Kehlani is a fantastic singer, and there’s no denying her style. But I’d love to hear her show more range. Some artists have a recognizable voice but still manage to make every song feel different. Take Khalid, for example. His voice is easy to recognize, but each song feels like its own world. That’s the kind of energy I’d love to see Kehlani explore.
So how could she do it? She could try singing in a different way on some songs, exploring different moods, or adding unexpected elements that make each song feel distinct. Even small changes, like shifting the pace, the tone, or the story she tells, could make her music feel fresh while keeping her signature style. Collaborations are great too—they bring in new energy and ideas—but I’d love to see her push her solo tracks a little further.
Her music is still emotional, addictive, and beautiful. But after listening to a few albums, I can’t help but hope she experiments more. She has the talent, the voice, and the heart to make each song feel like a new experience while keeping the warmth and soul that make her music so special.
